The stepsound attribute defines the sounds a block makes when walked on and, despite what the name may lead you to believe, the sound the block makes when it is being placed and when it breaks. It has no effect on the function of the block, being solely for the sake of immersion.
When creating a block, you set the step sound like so:
Because the name of the attribute is a String it must be in quotes.
There are only six valid audio sets that can be selected with this attribute. They are 'grass', 'stone', 'wood', 'metal', 'cloth', 'gravel', and 'glass'. All coorespond to the sound made by the vanilla minecraft block of the same name with the exceptions of 'metal' and 'cloth' which are the sounds of iron blocks and wool respectively.
Note that while this attribute is set in much the same was as Material, many of the valid values are different. For example "stone" will work as a stepsound, but not as a material type.
By default, the stepsound of a block will be that of Stone. If you're intentionally making a block that has the sounds of stone, you can omit this variable to decrease the size of the .block file slightly.
